The First National Workshop of Dalit Christian Artists

A Three days workshop of Dalit Christian Artists was organised by Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) Office for SC/BC at Indian Social Institute, Bangalore from 19th – 21st May 2018. The workshop was inagurated by Rev. Fr. Selva SJ, Director of Indian Social Institute, Bangalore. Rev. Fr. Devasahayaraj, National Secretary for CBCI Office for SC/BC explained the purpose and dynamics of this Workshop.  Senior Artist Mr. Jyoti Sahi from Bangalore was the resource person. He motivated the artists to come out with Dalit Art through biblical concepts. It was the first ever Workshop organised for the Dalit Christian Arists. The workshop was to create and promote the Dalit Art which is so rich and forgotten along the history. There were 20 participants from across the country mostly represented from Andhra Pradesh, Pune, Karnataka, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu states. The participants are of Art College Students, Professional Artists and Experienced Artists of different age group.

On the very first day, Mr Jyoti Sahi spoke elaborately on Religious Art particularly Biblical Art to the participants. On the Last Day of the Workshop, the Paintings drawn by the participants were exhibited to the visitors and art lovers. The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. Inba Jeyakumar, General Secretary of Students Christian Movement. He insisted that we should make use of Dalit Art as a weapon for Dalit Liberation. The viewers were amazed on looking at the paintings of the participants drawn within a short period of time of this workshop. Sr Robancy, the program Co-coordinator for CBCI Office for SC/BC, thanked the artists and the guests.
